BLOG TOUR: ‘In Servitude’ by Heleen Kist

I am so excited to present my very first blog tour post! This is going to be a review of the psychological suspense/mystery book ‘In Servitude’, which I liked very much, and I’m so lucky to have been able to read it, and be part of this tour! This book is really something that’s worth reading. A huge thank you to both the author and Digital Reads Blog Tours for giving me the opportunity to put my paws on this one!

So, let’s see what I thought about it, a.k.a. my review:

Discovery:

I came across this book on Shalini‘s site, Digital Reads Blog Tours.

It seemed like she really, genuinely liked this book, and it sounded great, so when finding out about her still needing some people for this tour, I didn’t hesitate to jump at the opportunity. A psychological suspense always comes in handy! Especially if it’s really as good as it looks like.

Brainstorm:

Turned out it really was! I enjoyed this book very much. I don’t like the cliché wording ‘a page turner’, but it is what it was. It was very easy to read, pages were just flying by. It kept my attention, yet it wasn’t so simple that makes the style annoyingly dumb. The story was very interesting, believable, it was complicated enough to be sucked in and not be able to figure out everything before the reader is supposed to, but the author has the gift of such natural and clear composition that it was very easy to follow what was happening.

At first I felt like characters (especially the ones not so much at the centre of current happenings) were not so much worked out (good, but not exceptional), but I changed my mind while reading the novel. This is a very action-packed book, and many times it is what a character does and what they’re doing it for is what draws a picture of them, and not actual babbling about how one functions and feels and what they’re like. And that was done professionally in this book. I knew it before I finished it completely, but what made me think about it more and see how brilliant it is, is the very last page, or let’s see, the last about two pages.

See, I ran across this book feeling excited and interested in what was gonna happen, and I enjoyed the ride very much, but up until the very ending, I thought it was simply a good suspense novel, and that we’re simply in it for finding out about the mystery.

And then the ending happened. It was weird, because in a meaning I was caught completely off-guard, but somehow I also felt like the whole book was building up towards this, it was just presented so subtly that I only sensed it subconsciously. Looking back, the ending gave the whole thing a new angle, a new perspective, one that is maybe a bit more philosophical than the book seemed before. It also helped understanding the main character more. Something clicked in its place psychologically, if I may put it like that.

Uniqueness:

This book has something to say about ourselves, about people, about, however good or bad it might be, how we work. It’s a very good mystery novel, but it has something more to say than the average suspense book. When you close it after the last chapter, it stays with you. You’re made to think.

Recommend to:

Everybody. Especially those who like psychology and psychological fiction, different takes on what our human life is like and what it is about.

Drink tip:

A tequila, maybe even without salt or lemon.

Hm… ‘Nightmare’ by Avenged Sevenfold

Future:

I really hope Heleen Kist will write more books! This is the beginning of a very successful ride in my opinion. She’s the kind of author whose writings I would read basically unconditionally, I would give anything a try if she wrote it. Talented one, she is!
