Quote of the Week

Today I am bringing you a quote about music.

It’s not from a book I’ve read, and according to many sources on the internet, nobody actually knows where it exactly came from. Some places it’s ascribed to Plato, but I’ve read enough articles to question that.

So far I couldn’t figure out who said or wrote it for sure, so I’m going with Plato? here. I still share it, though, because it describes very well what music means to me, in a way the only other thing would describe it better would be… well, music itself.

Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and life to everything. It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good, just and beautiful, of which it is the invisible, but nevertheless dazzling, passionate, and eternal form.

Plato? (Wordsworth Dictionary of Musical Quotations, 1991, p. 45).

Music is something indescribably magical to me, and means way more than I could ever put into words. Playing music, and especially singing is as natural and important to me as breathing. (Well, maybe not AS important as oxygen.. I know I would actually die without THAT. Still. You get the idea.) I’ve had a very musical upbringing, and that will forever determine its substantial role in my life. Listening to it makes my soul whole.

What place music has in your life? What does it mean to you? Is there any book that expresses the importance/meaning of music the way you feel about it?

Let’s have a chat in the comment section!
